A propane tank can “trip” when there’s a sudden change in pressure or gas flow, often caused by opening the tank valve too quickly. This is a built‑in safety feature designed to prevent gas leaks. The good news? Resetting it is usually quick and easy, so you can get back to enjoying your barbecue.
How to Burp a Tripped Propane Tank
Step 1: Turn all barbecue burner knobs to the OFF position.
Step 2: Ensure the propane tank valve is fully turned OFF.
Step 3: Disconnect the hose from the propane tank. You may hear a brief hissing sound—this is the tank releasing pressure, or being “burped.”
Step 4: Once the hissing stops, reconnect the hose to the tank.
Step 5: Wait 30 seconds.
Step 6: Slowly open the propane tank valve—about a quarter turn every 1–2 seconds.
